dsh-auto-rename: A DSH plugin that names DeepSeek Harness conversations automatically
theflippy978/dsh-auto-rename
Automatic conversation naming for DeepSeek Harness: the first prompt titles itself, and the rename dialog streams AI-suggested titles.
dsh-auto-rename is a conversation naming plugin for DeepSeek Harness that tackles the everyday annoyance of blank session titles and the chore of naming them by hand. When a session sends its first message, it generates a title once from that message, and any title you rename yourself is pinned so it is never silently overwritten. For renaming, the AI Name button at the top of the conversation page opens a dialog that mirrors the native window, with candidates streaming in one at a time that you can apply with a click or regenerate as a fresh set. It also lets you pin a naming model, cap title width, and mark title events with its provider id so you can tell which titles it produced.

What Does It Do?
Auto Rename is a DSH plugin for DeepSeek Harness that gives conversations their titles automatically. It solves the problem of sessions sitting with an empty title and the chore of naming them by hand: the first message names the session itself, and the rename dialog streams AI title suggestions. Maintained by Theflippy978 under the MIT license, it combines first-prompt naming, streamed rename suggestions, a selectable naming model, and an audit trail of which titles it produced.
Core Features
- Names the first prompt: when a session sends its first message and the title is still empty, a title is generated once from that message alone; a later manual rename pins the title so it is never rewritten.
- Streams suggestions while renaming: the AI Name button at the top of the conversation page opens a dialog that mirrors DSH's native rename window, with candidates arriving one at a time over NDJSON and each revealed by a 500 ms left-to-right sweep.
- One-click apply and regenerate: click a chip to fill the input, press Regenerate for a fresh set, confirm with Enter, close with Esc, and Enter during IME composition never submits by mistake.
- Choose the naming model: naming follows the conversation's main model by default or pins a cheaper one, and the dropdown is built from the host's model catalog so every entry is actually authenticated and callable.
- Leaves an audit trail: the plugin's provider id is written into source.provider of every session/title event, so you can tell which titles it generated.
- Reads only what you typed: automatic naming uses the first human message and suggestions use the three most recent ones, each clipped to a default of 4096 bytes before reaching the model.
How to Use This Plugin?
After enabling it in DSH, just start a session and send the first message; the title appears on its own. To rename, click the AI Name button at the top of the conversation page, pick from the streamed candidates, or press Regenerate for another set. Click the gear in the dialog's title row to expand settings: rename on first prompt, naming model, suggestion count (1–5, default 3), output token limit (default 64), timeout (default 60000 ms), and title width (default 12 CJK characters, the only length knob). Edits are staged and written only on Save, and an empty field means use the default. If the host has no remote assembled or listing fails, the model row falls back to manual Provider and Model fields, which must be filled in pairs.
How to Troubleshoot This Plugin?
A registration error usually means the built-in session title service registered first, since that service accepts exactly one provider globally; confirm the built-in title row is disabled as the official instructions describe. A half-set manual Provider or Model route logs a warning at startup and errors clearly when used, so fill in both halves. When the host has no usable remote model catalog, the model dropdown degrades to manual fields; fill them in and retry.
