A session-level gear rail for DeepSeek Harness: switch from read-only planning to full autonomy in one click, injecting behavior prompts per gear, with model upshift approval and a handbrake that hard-blocks tool calls.

dsh-gear-mode is a DSH plugin that turns whether the model should act right now into a clickable gear rail on the left of the conversation view. It targets the fuzzy behavior boundaries a single model shows across different intents by injecting that gear's behavior constraints into every request when you shift. Core capabilities include six gear families P/R/N/M/D/A plus a handbrake H, model-side upshifts that need your approval, hard interception of all tool calls while the handbrake is down, and automatic gear restoration after resume or fork.

What Does It Do?

Gear Mode is a DSH plugin for DeepSeek Harness that turns "should the agent act now?" into a clickable, visible, enforceable session-level gear state. It solves the ambiguity of behavior boundaries when the same model faces different intents: shifting a gear injects that gear's behavior constraints into the prompt, re-read on every request. Its core capabilities include six gear families P/R/N/M/D/A plus a handbrake H, model-side upshifts that require your approval, hard interception of all tool calls while the handbrake is down, and automatic state restoration after resume or fork.

Core Features

  • Gear set: read-only planning P, read-only review R, conversation group N (chat NT / coach NC / explain NE), manual group M (step-by-step M- / continuous M+), delegate D, and autonomous A; click a letter to shift and hover to see that gear's behavior notes.
  • Handbrake H: one click arms it and a second click drops it; once down, a tool guard hard-blocks all tool calls so the model can only report status. Hold H for 750ms to release it and return to P.
  • Model-side set_gear tool: downshifts and pulling the handbrake take effect immediately, while upshifts pop a card asking for your approval; a refusal keeps the current gear and the model does not retry.
  • Externalized prompts: injected text comes from a sectioned prompt file re-read on every request, so edits apply on the next message without a restart, with per-section fallback to built-in wording.
  • Restrained UI: the rail only appears in the conversation view and hides when main panels open; after a shift or 5 seconds of mouse inactivity it fades to just the current gear.
  • Recoverable state: gears are a session projection restored after resume or fork; no external services are contacted and no telemetry is collected.

How to Use This Plugin?

After enabling it in DSH, a gear rail appears on the left of the conversation area: hover for descriptions, click a letter to shift, drag up or down along the rail to sweep through gears, and move right past the edge to open the current group's sub-gears. To stop the agent, click H twice to drop the handbrake, or press Ctrl+Shift+H (⌘⇧H on macOS) for the same two-step confirmation; release it by holding H for 750ms, or click any gear to release it yourself and switch there. The /gear command reports the current gear, switches to a given gear, pulls the handbrake, or releases it only. To customize each gear's behavior requirements, edit the matching section of the prompt file; keep a personal copy and point to it via the environment variable if you prefer not to touch the shared file.
